Deer Stones
July 30th, 2007
The stone sculputures in the Mongolian countryside blend with the landscape. The old gods were gods of sun, moon and sky and the Deer Stones are carved stones that reflect this. Large standing stones engraved with deer and Buddhist or Shamanistic symbols, the appear unexpectedly in the middle of empty spaces.
By contrast, the carvings in the temples in Ulan Baatar are elaborate and ornate. I feel after three years of searching and asking questions that I’m starting to get a grasp of the complex Buddhist religion. There are so many different paths, but then, I’ve always believed that we each have our individual path to follow.
I’ve never been in a country quite like this before.
