The Goldsmiths of Pescocostanzo
November 10th, 2007
Where does the time go? From California to Italy and back to California, I’ve been in a state of constant jet lag. However, in the world of jewelry, I did encounter the goldsmiths of Pescocostanzo. Pescocostanzo is a beautiful town in the mountains of the Abruzzo region. It still has a Medieval feel to it with cobblestone streets and stone buildings. I spoke with a goldsmith there, Carlo Rainaldi. The goldsmiths of the area base many of their designs on the embroidery of the region–both are an intricate and delicate filigree that seems to be inspired by work from the Middle East.
